Uppercase magazine is created by Janine Vangool
If you miss the days of wonderfully made publications that you can hold, smell the ink and the paper, and turn each page, then Uppercase magazine is for you. Created by Janine Vangool, a Canadian designer, each issue features page after page of art, wonders, and reader-submitted content. Coined as a magazine for the ‘creative and curious’, the magazine has succeeded in not just sales but in its die-hard readers, and in being recognized for its design excellence.
Though the content is based in graphic design, illustration and crafting as its starting points, with such a broad statement the articles can be quite eclectic. I think it is this curious bent that makes the magazine unique and hopefully surprising with each new issue.
I think I’ve only missed Issues #1 and 2, but the rest I dare not miss, even with the price tag of $80 for the US/Canada rate. The content is always fresh, interesting, and like no other magazine out there. I look forward to its arrival (and smell), and dive in each issue with excitement and the willingness to learn about new and interesting things & people.
The physical format of UPPERCASE magazine is part of its appeal—it is something that you hold, carry, collect and keep. I always strive to make each issue an object that is well-crafted and has attention to detail in in its paper stock, special print processes or formats… these are the things that make print so special.
