WATERLOO – This holiday season, you can give the gift of a lifetime – a new home to a family in need.

The big push is on by volunteers for Habitat for Humanity of Seneca County to finish its latest project, rehabbing a house at 15 Mill Street for Chrissy Smith and her four children. Work on the project began last summer, but, as with any rehab project, there have been lots of unexpected twists. Now Habitat is pushing to finish the home so Chrissy and her family can be in it for Christmas.

“I’m excited to see that we are nearing the end,” Chrissy said as she painted the walls in her living room, part of the required “sweat equity” hours each Habitat owner must put in. “I’m a little impatient, but also sad it might be over. This has been a lot of hard work, but it’s also been a lot of fun. I’ve met so many great people. I will miss seeing them every week.”

Last week, some volunteers from Waterloo Rotary helped paint primer on the walls of the four-bedroom home. On Saturday, scores of volunteers turned out to finish the priming and begin to apply the finished coat to the upstairs and downstairs walls, and Susan Souhan and Jeannie Giovannini painted molding for trim.

In the bathroom, Menzo Case and construction boss Lou Ferrara were piecing together the pipes for the bathtub.

Gary Reynolds of Reynolds Masonry put the finishing touches on 55 feet of sidewalk he installed across the front of the house, while George Nogle and Frank LoTurco constructed the new front steps. Dan Taber of Dan’s Lawn Service worked on the driveway.

“We need lots of volunteers to finish this job,” said board member Karen Simon. “We have work for everyone, inside and out.”

To volunteer, contact Patrice Giansante at Womenbuildsenecafalls@gmail.com

or just show up at 15 Mill St. Work hours are Mon. – Thurs. mornings 8-11:30 a.m. There will be no Tues. or Thurs. evening hours, except for scheduled volunteer groups. Saturdays remain the same – from 8:00am – 3:00pm.

Habitat for Humanity works in partnership with people in need to build homes or renovate existing homes to create decent, affordable housing. The houses then are sold to those in need at no profit and with no interest charged. Mortgage payments received by the affiliate are used to build more homes.
