Watch Awkward – My Love is a Black Heart Online S02E05 ...

My Love is a Black Heart

Awkward - My Love is a Black HeartAs for this episode, “My Love is a Black Heart”, the show continues to inch its way through the school year–the premiere featured Christmas and New Year’s Eve, and now we’re up to Valentine’s Day. Love is in the air, and like always, Jenna is trying to figure out her new relationship with Jake with her old relationship with Matty. To make things worse, Matty seems to be actively interested in the freshman blonde he sniffed his pits to in last week’s episode.

Even with my love of the character Kyle the Stalker, Tamara had some major ground to make up for thanks to her weak storyline as a solo act last week, begging the question if she could hold her own without Jenna to bounce off of. Luckily, based on tonight’s episode she should have no problems without her BFF. The motive of dedicating all her energy to making Ricky jealous, fall in love with her, or get over him is her staple motivation in the show, but it allowed for some great holiday bitterness that formed into quality dialog on the writer’s part tonight. Though I do have to ask, would seeing Ricky making out with Sadie really make her pee her pants?

Jenna and Matty show up to a date that is precisely what she told Matty about, but they end up sitting a table directly next to Matty and Courtney’s date. The awkward tension is there throughout the episode and when they finally return home after the date, Jake finishes the date off with his gifts to Jenna. He didn’t send Matty to ask, he already knew and Jenna is starting to realize what a great thing she has going with Jake, and that if she has moved on from Matty, why can’t he move on as well?

However, there’s a big difference between Matty and Jake, and Jenna pointed it out tonight: Jake seems to pick up on Jenna’s personality and what she might like instinctively. Jake didn’t need to know what Jenna’s ideal night would be because he knows what she likes; Matty is still trying to get to know Jenna past deflowering her.

Awkward S02E05: My Love is a Black Heart

Now, I’m not opposed to Awkward. giving us the obligatory Valentine’s Day episode because it is a good source of angst and comedy, but I was very underwhelmed with what the show did with the holiday. Most of “My Love” was either extremely predictable (we all knew Jake was going to say “I love you” and Jenna wasn’t going to say it back) or extremely tired (how much lonely heart non-sense do we need). Had we actually gotten something new and interesting, then I would’ve been more entertained, but it all felt like more of the same teenage drama.

As much as I enjoy Rickards’ performance, Jenna has become more cumbersome as a character this season. Although she’s always been interested in herself (her blog is an introspective, reflective diary, but it’s also all about her), it seems like Jenna has become a great deal more narcissistic in S2. It’s almost as though being in a relationship (out in the open) has convinced her that she’s the center of everyone’s world. And that’s what she reveals in her voice over when Matty ices her bruised head at the restaurant: Jenna never considers that Matty is no longer in love with her.

At Jenna’s house, OMG TEEN DAD IS BACK! LOOKING FOXY!!!! He’s dropping Jenna off, not looking for a Valentine reunion with Teen Mom, who sadly throws his V-day gift in the trash. She makes up some stuff about all of the “events” she has going on with her “new friends,” and I feel really bad for her. I mean, yeah, writing that letter was terrible, but come on, Teen Dad! Show some forgiveness! By taking off your shirt again! After Teen Dad leaves (SOB), Jenna gives Teen Mom a hard time about lying, so Teen Mom gives her a 10PM curfew. Harsh!

Tamara looks like she is finally coming to terms with her Rickey Schwartz problem. Ming has started to find her identity, and even a guy. Sadie is slumming it, and definitely sinking from her HBIC role. Lissa is standing up for herself and showing more confidence. Hell, even Val has become more perceptive. For God’s sake, Val’s character has become less one note than the love triangle! That is a little of a terrifying thought.

It’ll be interesting to see how Ming’s over-protective parents react if this boy stays in the equation, and if the pee running down Tamara’s leg in public was the gross little wake up call she needed to finally move on from Ricky.

Finally, very little forward momentum of the separation between Kevin (Mike Faiola) and Lacey (Nikki Deloach) – he’s still not interested in forgiving her and she’s desperate to pretend she’s fine. It’s rather cruel of Jenna to poke holes in her mom’s obviously fake social life, so the entire “Lifetime movie marathon” comment just makes the teenager seem even more juvenile than usual. Even Jenna’s reconciliatory gesture – giving Lacey the stuffed toy love bug her father left for her – is poorly thought out.

So what did you think of tonight’s episode? What did that love hater throw at Jenna’s shirt? Looked like a tiny egg, but who knows. What heart would you want Valerie to give you? How do you choose to read Matty’s motivation in all of this? Is he really moving on or is it all to get at Jenna? Were you happy for Ming that she is getting some action? Why was there no journal writing tonight? Something tells me there will be plenty next episode.
